| small brown discs studded with darker brown jewels. your children eat these. now i understand them better. the chocolate is a strange substance ~ it is bitter and sweet at the same time, and it goes soft when warm and hard when cool. i am told earth-children will trade many things for one of these. i would also. |

2 cups of the white powder you call flour 1 cup of softened butter half a cup of white sugar half a cup of brown sugar 2 eggs from your chickens 1 small spoon of vanilla 1 small spoon of baking soda a pinch of salt 2 cups of chocolate chips (the dark brown jewels) |

1. heat your oven to 375 of your degrees. i had to ask my friend what a degree is. it is a number for hotness. 2. in a large bowl, mix the butter and both sugars until they are smooth and pale. 3. add the eggs and the vanilla. mix again. 4. in another bowl, stir the flour, the baking soda, and the salt together. 5. slowly add the dry things to the wet things. stir gently until they become one dough. 6. fold in the chocolate jewels. do not be shy with them. 7. drop spoonfuls of dough onto a flat metal sheet, with space between each one. they will spread. 8. bake for about 10 minutes. the edges should be gold and the centers still soft. 9. let them rest before you eat one. this is the hardest step. |
| kl'vaiim's note ~ i made these for the first time and ate four before i remembered to write down what i did. i had to make them again to write this recipe. a happy accident. |
